Greetings, I’m Carissa!

I would describe myself as a therapist with a deep appreciation for individual, holistic health needs. My educational, professional, and personal experiences have given me immense respect for the fact that health can look different to everyone. Further, health and the process for healing can look different at different times in our lives. Life and health are dynamic!

My hope is to meet you where you are in your life journey and to build a safe therapeutic relationship from which we can collaboratively do meaningful work and make changes you want to see in your life. I commit to continued learning as I try to best support your specific needs, priorities, and beliefs. My goal for each session is to provide an empathetic, affirming, and healing space for this to unfold.

My education and career in healthcare has spanned nearly two decades. I began in nursing where I enjoyed learning about the human body and physical conditions. However, I often found myself more interested in the complex relationship between physical health and mental health and eventually went back to school for my bachelor’s degree in psychology.

I worked in behavioral health, wellness, and diverse abilities/disabilities services and began focusing on the importance of other life domains in an individual’s state of wellbeing. The recognition that we do not exist within vacuums, but very complex interwoven and intersecting identities prompted my desire to return to school. I then earned my master’s degree in social work at the University of Michigan and now hope to pursue my certification for sex therapy soon.

As an avid backpacker, hiker, forager, gardener, and plant, animal, and travel enthusiast I believe in the importance of our connection with the world and feel it plays a critical role in how we experience life. If I am able, I am generally outside looking at flora and fauna. For me, the Earth holds a deep spiritual well! I am also a person with a chronic, invisible illness and diverse abilities. This identity gives me a unique passion and perspective when working with diverse abilities/disabilities and chronic illness folks. I’m keenly aware of the impact ableism, disability and invisible illness bias, and lack of universal design can have as well as self-acceptance and possible struggles with identity in the face of adapting to an illness, change in ability etc. These all play a role in life satisfaction, relationships, wellbeing, self-esteem, and goals.

I believe in putting an individual’s unique holistic wellbeing front and center by utilizing an eclectic, person-centered therapeutic approach that supports and amplifies your unique strengths. Throughout my career in diverse settings, I have enjoyed gaining experience working with folks holding many identities including: neurodiverse, diverse abilities/disabilities, HSPs/empaths, BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, Polyamorous, ENM, kink, and others. My priority is to hear your story and how you experience your identity in your life, from your perspective.

I am thrilled to be a part of the RISE team and mission! This is a special, vital resource for often underserved and under recognized communities. I feel truly honored to be a part of the value driven teamwork happening here. I feel our bodies and sexuality can be an evolving source of frustration, joy, pain, and pleasure. I feel that everyone is entitled to and can benefit from a fulfilling relationship with their physical bodies and sexual identities and expressions, alone and shared with others, without exception.

Whether you are looking to process past experiences for healing and understanding, explore your identity, spirituality, or personality, adjust to an illness or change in ability, work on communication or relationship dynamics, or work on better managing anxiety, I would love to help you in this process and to provide a safe, competent place for this to happen!
